Phonetic speller
Phonetics make call signs clear on noisy channels. The FCC rules encourage them for phone identification (47 CFR 97.119(b)(2)).
Spell it out
- WWhiskey
- 1One
- AAlfa
- WWhiskey
Practice
Say a random call sign out loud in phonetics, then check yourself.
How it works
- These are the spellings in ITU Radio Regulations Appendix 14, also used by the FAA. Some references print Alpha and Juliet instead of Alfa and Juliett; they are spoken the same way.
- Appendix 14 also defines code words for digits (Nadazero, Unaone and so on); this tool speaks digits as plain numbers.
