Lesson 5: Electronic and Electrical Components

Lesson 5 of 10, syllabus topic T6. The exam asks 4 questions from this topic, one from each of its 4 groups.

Components come next, described in the terms of the electrical principles lesson.

What you will learn

  • T6A Fixed and variable resistors; Capacitors; Inductors; Fuses; Switches; Batteries
  • T6B Semiconductors: basic principles and applications of solid-state devices, diodes and transistors; Gain
  • T6C Circuit diagrams: use of term schematic, basic structure; Schematic symbols of basic components
  • T6D Component functions: rectifiers, relays, voltage regulators, meters, indicators, integrated circuits, transformers; Resonant circuit; Shielding

1. Read

  1. Electronics basics: Common componentsHelps with T6A, T6B, T6D
  2. Electronics basics: Capacitors, inductors and reactanceHelps with T6A
  3. Electronics basics: Schematic diagramsHelps with T6C
  4. All 46 T6 questions with their answers and explanationsEvery group, with the rule or source behind each answer

2. Explore

  • Schematic symbols

Practice naming the symbols drawn in exam figures T-1, T-2 and T-3.

  • Resistors and capacitors

Read the color bands of a resistor and convert them to ohms.

  • Reactance and resonance

Pick an inductor and a capacitor and find the frequency where their reactances are equal. That is the resonant frequency of a tuned circuit made from the two.

3. Practice

Practice one group at a time. A group is ready when you have answered every one of its questions and learned at least 80 percent of them; a question counts as learned when your last three answers to it were correct. To review quickly, go through this lesson’s questions as flashcards.
