Lesson 5: Circuit Components

Lesson 5 of 10, syllabus topic G6. The exam asks 2 questions from this topic, one from each of its 2 groups.

Circuit components come next, described in the terms of the electrical principles lesson.

What you will learn

  • G6A Resistors; capacitors; inductors; rectifiers; solid-state diodes and transistors; vacuum tubes; batteries
  • G6B Analog and digital integrated circuits (ICs); microwave ICs (MMICs); display devices; RF connectors; ferrite cores

1. Read

  1. Antennas and feed lines: Connectors and weatherproofingHelps with G6B
  2. Connectors and cables: The common RF connectorsHelps with G6B
  3. All 23 G6 questions with their answers and explanationsEvery group, with the rule or source behind each answer

2. Explore

  • Coil and toroid winder

Double the number of turns on a toroid core and the inductance becomes four times larger, because inductance grows with the square of the turns.

  • Resistors and capacitors

Find the standard resistor value nearest to a value you calculate, and the combination of standard values that comes closest.

3. Practice

Practice one group at a time. A group is ready when you have answered every one of its questions and learned at least 80 percent of them; a question counts as learned when your last three answers to it were correct. To review quickly, go through this lesson’s questions as flashcards.
